Les éperdus is an immersive installation made of images, sound, light, wind, and fog. Anne-Sophie Emard imagined this project during a creative residency in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. On the basis of interviews with women and men (children and adults) she met there, she imagined six characters who come to life through one actress embodying a symbolic mountain family. Each of the separate stories are intertwined and respond to each other within the installation: either in the fragments of the stories themselves, or in the narrative sequence.
The mechanism, linked to the Requin weather station located in the Mont-Blanc Massif, is subject to the vagaries of the weather there. The programming of images and effects depends on the weather at this altitude. Updated every fifteen minutes, several times a day, it is a different installation that is presented to visitors, and new stories are written. This nature, whose climate is disrupted, is inextricably linked to the intimacy of our life stories. Les éperdus is a sensitive experience.
In Anne-Sophie Emard‘s proposals, as she herself says, “we look at something other than what we see”, and if the artist often connects two images, it is not so that we “see” these two images, but so that we see another one, not a third one, another one, an image-construction, an image-thought. The journey “in itself” is a journey that lasts as long as life lasts. This journey, of course, is nourished by everything that each of us encounters “outside ourselves”. It feeds on it and is complicated by it. We have to distinguish between what is a sign and what is a meaning, between what distances us from the “in itself” and what allows us to get closer to it…”.
