Geomorph Momenta

Golnaz Behrouznia

2021 / Iran / France

Salle Gilbert Gaillard, 2 rue Saint-Pierre, Clermont-Ferrand

Opening time:
Tuesday to Saturday from 1 pm to 7 pm
Sunday from 2 pm to 6 pm

The work:

Geomorph Momenta is an immersive visual and sound installation that echoes the Earth’s environment.
Five biconical objects, made of translucent fabric, are suspended in the exhibition space.
Several cycles of video and sound are triggered, evoking a sensitive dramaturgy of the biogeochemical entities of our Earth and its interwoven organs: hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere…
The rhythm of the images and sound, as well as other audio and video parameters, echo both the regulating capacity of the earth’s “organs”, the tendency to maintain balance in nature (homeostasis), as well as the tipping points and thresholds, beyond which equilibria are broken, sometimes irreversibly, and which lead to new equilibria.

The artist:

Golnaz Behrouznia has been known for several years by a multimedia work focused on the living thing. The forms that she patiently develops, since her passage through the Fine Arts in Tehran and the Création Numérique in Toulouse, are not without links to what we know about the organization of life: we can recognize on her “chimeras” eyes, limbs, flagella, perhaps mouths, stomachs. Looking at his drawings, his sculptures, his installations and performances, we don’t feel totally disoriented, without it being an artist’s representation.

In this fragile balance between the impression of the known and the sensation of not being in the representation of a specimen, the spectator hesitates, asks himself if he knows what he sees, or if he is in front of something completely unknown, whose referent he would never have seen.

The seduction of Golnaz Behrouznia’s work operates from this moment, this point of imbalance where the viewer always stands – even if he or she frequents these works very regularly. Seeing them over and over again does not solve the enigma. Her recent work is based on a desire to question societal and environmental issues with the very tools that have shaped our last thirty years. In Dissimilarium, it is the burning question of how to inhabit the world, when it may be an illusion, or when it may already be too late, or when hybridization has made the original monad disappear.
